What Is a Tooth Extraction?

An extraction, put simply, involves gently removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It becomes the necessary path once restoring the tooth is no longer realistic and keeping it in place risks causing further damage.

When Removing a Tooth Becomes Necessary

A few scenarios point toward extraction: decay that’s advanced past what a crown or filling can fix, a root infection that didn’t respond to root canal treatment, an impacted tooth causing repeated issues, or structural damage severe enough to threaten the surrounding bone and neighboring teeth.

Common Signs You May Need a Tooth Extraction

Pain that won’t ease up with treatment, a tooth that’s grown noticeably loose, infections that keep returning in the same spot, a fracture below the gumline, or steady pressure from a wisdom tooth that hasn’t erupted. Any of these is worth bringing up with our dental care team.

Protecting Your Long-Term Oral Health

The immediate problem goes away once the tooth is out, but a gap remains, and that gap needs a plan. Replacement options, implants, bridges. Get discussed right at the extraction appointment, so there’s a clear next step before leaving.

Reasons Patients Need a Tooth Extraction in Stittsville

Severe decay past the point of repair, advanced periodontal disease, trauma to the tooth, a root infection that root canal treatment couldn’t resolve, or wisdom teeth causing crowding or persistent infection. These account for most of the cases that come through.
Before recommending removal, our team always weighs whether the tooth can be saved instead. Tooth extraction in Stittsville at Trillium Dental is considered a last resort.

Symptoms That May Indicate a Tooth Needs Removal

These are the signs we most often see in patients who visit our clinic and need an extraction.

Persistent Tooth Sensitivity

Something’s usually going on with the nerve when sensitivity lingers well after eating, or shows up with no clear trigger at all. If every conventional fix has already been tried and the discomfort keeps returning, extraction sometimes becomes the only way to resolve it.

Ongoing Dental Pain and Swelling

Swelling in the jaw or gums, paired with throbbing pain, usually points to an abscess or a deep infection. Clearing it completely tends to come down to extraction paired with antibiotics. Together, they’re the most dependable route.

Bad Breath Caused by Infection

When bad breath sticks around no matter how consistent the oral hygiene is, a chronic root infection is often the culprit. If the tooth behind it can’t be saved, pulling it removes the source entirely.

Difficulty Chewing or Biting

Favoring one side while eating because of pain is rarely random. It usually points to a structural issue. From there, the team traces the cause before deciding whether extraction is the right call or another approach is a better fit.

Types of Tooth Extraction Procedures We Offer in Stittsville

We handle the full range of extraction procedures from straightforward removals to
complex surgical cases.

Simple Tooth Extractions

This applies to teeth that have fully erupted above the gumline. Numbing comes first with a local anesthetic, followed by loosening the tooth and lifting it cleanly out of the socket. Most patients in Stittsville resume normal activity within a couple of days.

Surgical Tooth Extractions

A surgical dental extraction is needed when a tooth has fractured below the gumline, has curved roots, or is positioned in a way that makes access difficult. A small gum incision provides the necessary access, and we section the tooth as needed to minimize impact on surrounding tissue.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Impacted wisdom teeth are among the most frequent cases at our clinic. When they fail to erupt fully or crowd adjacent teeth, they cause pain, infection, and potential root damage. Removing them before roots fully develop produces a simpler procedure and faster recovery.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction Appointment

Here is what happens at your appointment from start to finish.

Initial Examination and Diagnosis

X-rays come first; the root structure, surrounding bone, and how the tooth relates to what’s nearby are all mapped out. From there, the technique best suited to that specific case gets chosen.>

Preparing for the Procedure

Medical history is reviewed, then a local anesthetic is administered, with a pause before proceeding to ensure it has taken full effect. For patients who’d benefit from extra comfort, sedation is available too.>

The Extraction Process

Pressure and movement are part of it, but pain isn’t. That’s what patients feel during tooth extraction in Stittsville. Surgical cases add a step: careful access to the gums precedes systematic removal. We clean the site, place gauze, and suture where needed. Most patients find the procedure ends sooner than expected.>

Maintaining Oral Hygiene After a Tooth Extraction

Avoid vigorous rinsing, the use of straws, and forceful spitting for the first 24 hours to protect the healing blood clot. From day two onward, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals. Keep meals soft, drink enough fluids throughout the day, and leave smoking out of the picture entirely.
Aftercare instructions are included with every extraction at the Stittsville clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the questions our Stittsville patients ask most before their extraction appointment.
When should I visit a dentist for a tooth extraction in Stittsville?
If severe pain sets in, swelling won’t go unnoticed, a break becomes visible, or a tooth loosens for no obvious reason. Those are the moments when you should book a visit without delay. Getting ahead of it, assessment-wise, tends to keep things simple and recovery shorter.
What should I expect during a tooth extraction appointment in Stittsville?
A numbing injection goes first, followed by a brief wait before the procedure starts. Pressure is the sensation most patients report, not pain. Simple extractions run around 10 to 20 minutes, with the team keeping communication open the whole way through.
How long is the recovery period after a tooth extraction in Stittsville?
Two to three days covers most simple extractions. Surgical cases and wisdom tooth removals stretch longer, closer to five to seven days. A bit of swelling and tenderness in the first 48 hours is expected and not a cause for concern.

I have been with Trillium Dental – Jackson Trails since 2018/2019, and until today I had generally trusted them with my family’s dental care. although, I live far away from them.

Today, however, I received a call from a receptionist whose tone I found unnecessarily aggressive and rude. She repeatedly interrupted me while I was trying to speak, all over an $8 payment issue related to insurance processing.

Instead of resolving the matter directly with the insurance provider, I was simply asked to pay the amount myself, and my concerns were not handled professionally when I questioned that approach.

As a parent who had all of my children registered with this office, the experience was very disappointing. After today’s interaction, I have decided to move my family to another dental office that demonstrates stronger professionalism, better customer service, and a clearer understanding of insurance and financial processes.

Just had my appointment last night. The hygienist, dentist, and receptionists were all punctual and very nice! They were perfectly able to accommodate my schedule. The hygienist Katie is so wonderful, both her and the dentist (I can't remember her name, sorry!) made me feel very comfortable. They were also honest with me and didn't sugar coat what I needed to do better for my teeth, which I really appreciate! I've been coming to the Jackson Trails location for years, and I will continue to do so.

Thank you to the lovely ladies who helped me out with a bizarre situation.

I have been a patron for years but beyond impressed with the kindness and determination they had.

I highly recommend!!
Many people are wary of going to the dentist as I am. But Trillium Jackson Trails does an exceptional job to alleviate your angst. I recently had dental surgery and it went so much better than I anticipated. Dr. Baghrecha and her assistant explained everything thoroughly pre and post surgery. As well as during surgery. They were kind and empathetic. Post surgery Alison on the front desk was wonderful. Taking my phone calls and answering my many questions and told me not to hesitate to call back (which I did).
Thank you one and all!!!
