What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Prescribed medication is what makes sedation dentistry possible. It helps patients stay relaxed and comfortable for the duration of the dental treatment. You stay conscious and responsive at all times. Still, the sedation reduces tension, eases physical discomfort, and, in many cases, compresses your perception of time so that a lengthy procedure feels far shorter than it actually is.

How Sedation Dentistry Works

The method of administration varies by type. Oral sedation is taken as a tablet approximately one hour before your appointment. IV sedation is delivered through a small cannula once you are comfortably seated. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a nasal mask and takes effect within minutes. In every case, our IV sedation dentist in Stittsville monitors your vital signs throughout and adjusts the level as the appointment progresses.

Benefits of Sedation During Dental Treatment

Sedation enables patients who have been deferring care to receive the treatment they need comfortably. It also allows our team to complete more work in a single visit, reducing the total number of appointments required. Patients with a pronounced gag reflex, heightened sensitivity, or difficult past dental experiences find that sedation changes the process entirely.

Who Is Sedation Dentistry Right For in Stittsville?

Sedation dentistry in Stittsville fits a wide range of patients. Those dealing with significant dental-related tension, a pronounced gag reflex, or sensitivity that makes treatment hard to sit through benefit most from it.
Procedures that run long or come with added complexity are also far easier to manage under sedation. The IV sedation dentist works through the specifics during a consultation, then recommends the level of sedation that best fits.

Types of Dental Sedation We Offer in Stittsville

A handful of sedation options are available here, each designed to make the visit itself more comfortable.

General Dentistry Ottawa

Oral Sedation

A prescribed tablet taken before your appointment helps you feel more relaxed by the time you arrive at our clinic in Stittsville. You remain awake and responsive throughout treatment. Because the effects can last for several hours, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is delivered through a small line placed in the arm or hand and takes effect quickly. The level of sedation isn’t fixed once treatment starts. The team can adjust it as needed, which makes this option well-suited to procedures that run longer or involve complexity. Many patients remember little of their appointment afterward.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is delivered through a small mask worn over the nose. A calm, awake, responsive state throughout treatment. That’s what this delivers. Once the mask comes off, the effect fades fast, and most patients are back to their normal routine shortly after.

IV Sedation at Our Stittsville Dental Clinic – Deep Relaxation, Expert Care

Nothing on offer here goes deeper than IV sedation, and it’s the option best matched to patients dealing with real dental tension or facing extensive treatment. Our IV sedation dentist in Stittsville administers and monitors the sedation throughout your appointment, adjusting as the work progresses.
For patients in Stittsville who have been putting off necessary care because of their feelings about dental appointments, IV sedation is often the option that changes everything.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe in Stittsville?

Sedation dentistry is safe for the vast majority of patients when administered by a trained team following established clinical protocols.
Our experienced team conducts a thorough review of health and medications before recommending any option. Vital signs are continuously monitored throughout every sedation procedure, without exception.

What to Expect on Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment in Stittsville

For oral sedation, take the prescribed tablet before leaving home and arrange transport to and from our clinic. For IV sedation, arrive fasting as instructed, and our IV sedation dentist will place the cannula once you are comfortable.
For nitrous oxide, the process begins as soon as the nasal mask is fitted. Nitrous oxide clears within 15 minutes. Oral sedation may leave some drowsiness for several hours. IV sedation typically calls for the rest of the day at home. We provide written aftercare notes before you leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

If dental anxiety has kept you from treatment, these answers can help you decide whether sedation dentistry is a good fit.
Who is a good candidate for an IV sedation dentist in Stittsville?
Dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, treatment that’s more involved than usual, and a rough dental history. Any of these can point toward IV sedation being a good fit. The final call comes after the IV sedation dentist reviews your health history.
Is IV Sedation Safe for Dental Procedures in Stittsville?
The short answer is yes, provided a qualified provider is handling it with proper monitoring in place. That combination is what makes IV sedation safe for most patients. A review of medical history occurs up front, with monitoring throughout the entire treatment.
What Dental Treatments Can Be Completed Under Sedation in Stittsville?
Fillings, extractions, root canals, implant placement, and even some hygiene visits – sedation covers different dental treatments. It can also mean fewer overall visits, since multiple treatments are sometimes combined into a single sedated appointment.
How Should I Prepare for My Sedation Dentistry Appointment in Stittsville?
There are four things that are the most important when going in. Follow the fasting instructions that are given by the team, have a ride home, wear comfortable clothing and avoid alcohol before your appointment.
How Long Does Recovery Take After Dental Sedation in Stittsville?
Nitrous oxide clears fast, often gone within minutes of finishing up. Oral and IV sedation take a slower path, sometimes lasting several hours before wearing off completely, and driving should be avoided until that effect has fully lifted.

I had a great appointment with my hygienist Katie. She is gentle, caring, and always makes me feel comfortable and relaxed.
The staff are friendly and welcoming from the moment you walk through the door, and are always able to answer any questions I may have.

I have been with Trillium Dental – Jackson Trails since 2018/2019, and until today I had generally trusted them with my family’s dental care. although, I live far away from them.

Today, however, I received a call from a receptionist whose tone I found unnecessarily aggressive and rude. She repeatedly interrupted me while I was trying to speak, all over an $8 payment issue related to insurance processing.

Instead of resolving the matter directly with the insurance provider, I was simply asked to pay the amount myself, and my concerns were not handled professionally when I questioned that approach.

As a parent who had all of my children registered with this office, the experience was very disappointing. After today’s interaction, I have decided to move my family to another dental office that demonstrates stronger professionalism, better customer service, and a clearer understanding of insurance and financial processes.

Just had my appointment last night. The hygienist, dentist, and receptionists were all punctual and very nice! They were perfectly able to accommodate my schedule. The hygienist Katie is so wonderful, both her and the dentist (I can't remember her name, sorry!) made me feel very comfortable. They were also honest with me and didn't sugar coat what I needed to do better for my teeth, which I really appreciate! I've been coming to the Jackson Trails location for years, and I will continue to do so.

Thank you to the lovely ladies who helped me out with a bizarre situation.

I have been a patron for years but beyond impressed with the kindness and determination they had.

I highly recommend!!
Many people are wary of going to the dentist as I am. But Trillium Jackson Trails does an exceptional job to alleviate your angst. I recently had dental surgery and it went so much better than I anticipated. Dr. Baghrecha and her assistant explained everything thoroughly pre and post surgery. As well as during surgery. They were kind and empathetic. Post surgery Alison on the front desk was wonderful. Taking my phone calls and answering my many questions and told me not to hesitate to call back (which I did).
Thank you one and all!!!
